Hannah Scott

Wearable device that cures chronic insomnia, Flinders University

Chronic insomnia affects more than ten percent of the Australian population causing a real effect on the economy through loss of productivity. A person with insomnia is also more likely to be affected by psychiatric disorders including depression. PhD researcher Hannah Scott is part of a sleep research team which pioneered the THIM device to treat chronic insomnia. Where in the past a sufferer would need to attend a laboratory to undergo Intensive Sleep Retraining, this small ring-shaped THIM device can administer the same treatment by being worn on the patient’s finger during sleep from the comfort of their own home. Use of THIM has already produced significant results in sleep and daytime functioning after just a single treatment. For many of us who just crave a good nights sleep, watch this space!
