Sean Hardy
Scar tissue research to prevent heart attack, University of Newcastle
Sean is a young surfer from Newcastle who just so happens to work at the cutting edge, the very frontier of medical science and research. When a person has a heart attack, blood flow to the heart muscle can get blocked causing the tissue below that blockage to die. This ‘scar’ tissue then weakens the heart, greatly increasing the persons chances of another heart attack as well as reduced heart function. Sean studies that tissue with the aim of helping the millions of people affected by Australia’s biggest killer, heart disease.
